He is a long-standing Ambassador for the Builders Merchants Federation (since 2019), a Top 100 Influencer in the supply chain sector (2023), a member of the Institute of Builders Merchants and a member of the Worshipful Company of Builders Merchants. He is well-connected, widely trusted and consistently gives his time to the industry, most notably presenting at the Landscape Show in 2023.
What truly sets Shane apart, however, is the way he has used his profile to deliver meaningful change.
A five-time cancer survivor, Shane has become a powerful and credible voice on skin cancer awareness, particularly for those working outdoors in all conditions. Rather than keeping this personal, he has chosen to lead from the front. Since becoming an ambassador for Melanoma UK in 2022, Shane has worked tirelessly to raise awareness across the construction and merchanting sectors, sharing his story openly and encouraging practical action.
At Long Rake Spar, this has translated into tangible outcomes. Under Shane’s influence, the business introduced SPF 50 branded sunscreen for customers, installed suncream stations at all production sites to protect outdoor workers and embedded skin cancer awareness into company communications and culture. In May 2026, Long Rake Spar will once again support Skin Cancer Awareness Month with a coordinated programme of campaigns, events, and on-the-ground activity led by Shane. He will also be personally supporting the initiative at the Chelsea Flower Show, distributing sun protection to visitors and exhibitors.

If this award is genuinely about recognising those who have made a significant and lasting impact on our industry, then Kate Tinsley OBE has to be firmly in the conversation.
As CEO of MKM Building Supplies, and now recognised with an OBE for services to construction and for championing diversity, Kate represents the highest standard of leadership in our sector. That recognition reflects years of consistent performance, influence and contribution, not just within individual businesses, but across the wider industry.
Her career is both deep and diverse. Starting with PwC and Deloitte, she built a strong foundation before moving into senior roles at BSS Group, then progressing to Finance Director, Managing Director and CEO of Buildbase. From there, she joined Ibstock Plc, driving transformation and growth at board level, before returning to merchanting as CEO of MKM in 2020. That journey is built on sustained delivery and the ability to lead in different environments.
At MKM, her impact has been clear. The business has continued its ambitious expansion, growing to 129 branches nationwide, while maintaining a strong independent model and a focus on culture and customer experience. Achieving both growth and consistency at that scale is no small feat.
Beyond commercial performance, Kate’s influence on diversity and inclusion is a key reason she stands out. Our industry still has work to do, and having leaders who actively champion change is critical. Kate has not only represented progress but has helped drive it, creating opportunities and setting a standard for others to follow.
Her contribution extends beyond construction too, serving as a Senior Independent Director at the FA, operating at the highest level in another major sector.
At the core of her leadership is a clear belief in teamwork. Building the right environment, empowering people and delivering collectively. Simple in principle, but rare in execution.

Originally from Latvia, Dmitrijs moved to London in 2010 in search of opportunity. No silver spoon, no industry connections, no traditional route in.
Just ambition, resilience and a willingness to learn the hard way.
And he did.
Early ventures ranged from jewellery to food to importing products. Most didn’t work. But that’s the point. Real-world education. Trial, error, refinement.
Then came the breakthrough.
In 2013, he co-founded MGN Builders Merchants, starting from a small shop in Ilford. Today? A £25m+ business and one of London’s most recognised independent merchants.
Not enough? He didn’t stop there.
He went on to build Building Materials Wholesale Ltd , a £15m+ online-led platform simplifying how materials are bought nationwide. Then The Panel Delivery Company, now an £8m+ logistics operation controlling the supply chain end-to-end. And alongside that, Morgun Sakelis Investments building a property portfolio for long-term value.
This is proper entrepreneurial grit. Not theory. Not talk. Execution.
But that’s only half the story.
Dmitrijs has also become one of the most outspoken voices in the sector.
Through LinkedIn and YouTube, he consistently challenges:

Private equity behaviour
Supplier relationships
Accountability across the industry
He says what others think but won’t say.
And yes, that ruffles feathers.
But let’s be honest… it’s needed.

At the heart of everything which drives our independent, privately owned company is the desire to excel with our customer value and service proposition, to give them the best partnered approach possible. Adam is a great example of this and always strives to do his very best for the customer.
During Adam’s career he has held a number of key roles within the industry, most recently as Buying Group Sales Manager at Toolbank. This is a very high regarded position within the sector and he is responsible for a large percentage of the overall company turnover, still at only 35 years old. During his roles, Adam has never missed an annual sales target to date and always strives to put the customer first by putting himself in their shoes and trying to understand the full nature of the customers business which aids him to make the best decisions for the customer.

Another part of Adam’s role is to assist with the development of Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI) which is part of the Toolbank five year strategy, VMI is an automated order management system created in conjunction with Intact Management Software, it is designed to save customers money and make their business more efficient, in the short time since its launch Adam has assisted in onboarding three customers (JJ Roofing Supplies, County Building Supplies, Collier & Catchpole) with others also in the pipeline, this is a fantastic achievement by Adam and something which the business is extremely grateful for.

For over 15 years, Barry has consistently proven his drive and determination to bring excellence in customer service to our industry. Since he joined Flex-R over 7 years ago, he has developed in his role to demonstrably bring real value to the business and our customers.
Barry first joined Flex-R as an Area Sales Manager covering the North, with one of his key focus areas to build on the relationship with our existing buying group members. As Barry knows only too well, opening the door for a new client is only the very start of the journey and he has worked hard to deliver true value for the customer and excellence in customer service. It is his strength in understanding the needs of our industry which has seen him move quickly from Area Sales Manager to National Account Manager and most recently becoming Sales Director 18 months ago.
During his time at Flex-R Barry has focussed his efforts on growing the relationships we have with our buying groups, roofing merchants and independent builders’ merchants. He makes sure he is actively involved in meeting the requirements of each business and will happily engage with our customers on every level, from head office right through to the sales guys on the shop floor at regional level.
However, all of this work is only possible by building a strong team that can maintain the level of quality service our customers expect. Barry works with the ethos that a happy customer will continue to order from us, an attitude he extends through his team to ensure they have the same level of commitment for excellence. Since joining as Business Development Manager in March 2022, Joe has made a huge impression, not only with his customers but also with Flex-R. He has worked hard to prove that happy customers are loyal customers. Initially working across the North East of England and Scotland, he has been so successful in driving forward new and profitable opportunities for the merchants he works with, that he has had to reduce the size of his area. Only by working on the Scottish area could he ensure that he would keep his commitment to deliver the best service for his customers.
It certainly worked because the success of Joe’s approach has seen him bring in 25 new stocking members in only the first two years – nine of those he achieved in one month alone!
It’s not hard to see why, Joe is so popular with his customers and he is always available to answer their queries! Whether that’s always being available on the phone to answer queries, going the distance to visit his customers or demonstrating Flex-R products through branch demos for customers and staff training. When he’s at a branch he delivers 100% by actively listening to the issues the branch faces and demonstrating how a particular system can help to enhance their business.
Sales Director, Barry Shorrock agrees: “Joe is like a sponge. Everything we ask him to do, he takes on board and then delivers each and every time. He has embodied the friendly, hands-on nature of Flex-R and taken this into his dealings with the merchants. We’ve known Joe since his days before Flex-R. In fact, I remember when Barry Shorrock was looking to grow the merchant team, we recommended Joe for the job with a glowing reference. So when he joined the team, we were thrilled!
He’s a really friendly person, no matter what’s going on whether it’s business or personal, he’s always on it and has a smile on his face. He’s got this real positive energy about it, real beautiful soul.
Whenever we’ve called, he’s always on the other end of the phone. Never feel like we’ve been left behind. That’s what he’s great at, keeping you up to date on all Flex-R’s new initiatives. He really makes us feel important.
There’s been a couple of times where he’s really helped us when we’ve been up against it. Back when EPDM was on allocation and we had a spike in demand, he managed to fight our corner and get extra stock.”
But it’s not just about getting more stock. We had an issue once with a customer complaining about the product, saying we were liable for the failing roof. I knew this couldn’t be the case so I spoke with Joe who gave me everything I needed to know to put it to bed. Turns out, it wasn’t installed right. Without Joe backing me up, it could’ve easily gone a different way. He’s a real asset to Flex-R.

He quickly proved himself to be a valued part of the team and an obvious choice for our apprenticeship scheme. After completing college, Max undertook his apprenticeship and achieved a distinction. A genuine all-rounder, he has worked across all areas of the branch and has excelled in every role.
Max has impresses with his ability to build effective relationships with customers and for his natural sales ability. On completion of his apprenticeship, he was promoted to Sales Advisor and selected as one of eight colleagues on our first ‘Next Generation’ sales development programme. The programme is designed to develop rising stars by strengthening negotiation and networking skills and preparing them for future Sales and Sales Development Manager roles.
Max was independently selected by our Timber Specialists to attend a two-day training course in Sweden, deepening his understanding of our timber supply and broadening his knowledge of timber products. Although he was still an apprentice at the time, he represented Bradfords professionally throughout the visit. On his return, our suppliers and hosts provided extremely complimentary feedback on his conduct and engagement.
Max has an exceptional ability to connect with people and is highly regarded by colleagues and senior leaders across Bradfords. He consistently receives compliments and positive feedback from customers and visitors to our Glastonbury branch. He has recently been nominated for our internal Sales Person of the Year Award; in 2025, Max increased his sales by more than £700k and grew gross profit by over £200k—an outstanding result in challenging trading conditions. Chelsea joined us after completing her A Levels with no prior knowledge of building materials. She quickly established herself through her willingness to learn and take on any challenge. Her consistently positive approach combined with her willingness to ask questions and a strong work ethic enabled her to build a comprehensive understanding of the branch and how it operates. She is a great team worker and integrated well with colleagues across the Yard and Trade Counter, becoming an invaluable, multi-skilled team member.
Promoted to Sales Advisor, Chelsea is now a key member of the branch sales team. She builds strong, long-term customer relationships and uses her broad product knowledge and operational understanding to respond quickly, solve problems and ensure customer requirements are met first time.
Chelsea has remained committed to her development and has been identified by her Regional Sales Director as a future Sales Development Manager. As a result, she was selected for the Next Generation sales development programme—one of only nine colleagues across the business to be chosen.
She has used this opportunity to sharpen her sales skills and has already been nominated for an internal Customer Service Award at Bradfords. Nothing is too much trouble for Chelsea – she consistently goes above and beyond to exceed customer expectations. This commitment, alongside her approachable and professional manner, is a key reason she stands out as a Rising Star candidate.

Bradfords’ apprenticeship programme plays a vital role in bringing talent into our business, helping and nurturing individuals so they can make a valuable contribution. We recognise the fresh perspectives and enthusiasm that apprentices bring and we are proud to support their journey.
Baylie is a shining example of how apprenticeships benefit both the individual and the business. Following her A Levels and a brief time at university, she joined Bradfords in 2025 and is due to complete her apprenticeship in June 2026.
Joining with no prior knowledge of building materials or the merchant environment, Baylie quickly established herself as a valued part of branch life. She is curious and keen to learn, not afraid to ask questions and is always ready to listen to experienced colleagues and learn from them.
The Customer Service apprenticeship is designed to build capability and confidence, giving apprentices a clear understanding of the wider business context and the importance of outstanding customer service. Baylie has used the programme to its full extent, completing each module and assignment thoroughly and then going further to deepen her understanding. She is self-motivated and has proactively organised her own off-the-job learning, using her growing internal network to identify the right people to speak to and the best ways to learn from them.
Baylie has spent time across the branch, supporting the Trade Counter, Yard and Stock teams, and progressing into the Sales Office. This broad experience has helped her understand how each area supports the branch and how day-to-day decisions affect customer outcomes. Importantly, she shares what she learns, feeding back to colleagues and encouraging others to value cross-branch understanding when planning and making decisions.
Alongside her practical experience, Baylie has completed system and sales training, attended supplier sessions and progressed through a range of internal and online product and skills courses, including BMF Building Blocks. Her commitment to continuous learning has been outstanding.
Baylie’s efforts have not gone unnoticed. She has received excellent customer feedback and is consistently praised for her helpful and friendly approach. When she doesn’t know a product or process, she takes ownership by asking the right questions and following through to get the customer the right answer.
Her apprenticeship has not only given Baylie an insight into how a merchant branch operates, but also helped her appreciate how support teams and suppliers contribute to the bigger picture.
Her willingness to ask questions, her confidence to get involved and her drive to seize every learning opportunity have been central to her progress and we have no doubt that she will complete her apprenticeship in June 2026 with flying colours.

A key driver of this success has been Paul’s ability to develop independent merchant accounts. By working closely with customers and understanding their end-user needs, he has implemented clear, competitive pricing strategies supported by reliable next-day delivery across the region.
Paul is widely recognised for his meticulous account management and relationship-building skills. He has established strong, long-term partnerships across his territory, earning a reputation as a trusted and dependable partner to his customers.
More recently, Paul has played a pivotal role in growing national builder’s merchant accounts, including MKM. He has ensured a strong in-store presence for Owlett-Jaton brands, proactively promoting new product ranges through branch trade days and end-user specification visits, further driving engagement and sales.
Paul’s impact is also evident in his success with national buying groups. He has led several major multi-branch conversions to the Owlett-Jaton portfolio, including D McNair in Glasgow and GPH Builders Merchants in Aberdeen. These businesses have transitioned to key Owlett-Jaton brands, including Unifix, JCP, Vortex, JRP and Thunderbolt, with further conversions planned.
These achievements have strengthened relationships with key buying groups such NBG and IBC, positioning Owlett-Jaton for continued growth and increased adoption among their members.
Key achievements over the past 12 months include:
• Selected as one of the lead Area Sales Managers to represent Owlett-Jaton at the NMBS Exhibition (April), recognising Paul’s strong relationships. He engaged effectively with customers, further strengthening his network and Owlett-Jaton’s brand presence.
• Collaborated closely with MKM Builders Merchants branches across Scotland to implement and continuously refine a monthly ‘core basket,’ optimising product ranges and driving seasonal sales growth.

After completing her master’s degree, Millie started a management development course with Travis Perkins and was appointed as Operations Manager at the Bethnal Green branch, a role that she held for five months before being promoted to Branch Manager. When the opportunity came up to take up a secondment in Travis Perkins’ HR team just under a year later, she jumped at the chance.
In her current role as Assistant HR Business Partner, Millie supports the staff at the company’s Northampton distribution centre, and its Managed Services function which supplies materials to social housing providers.
